Check Up

Sarah had her three-year checkup with the doctor this week, and she looked fine. Sarah is, of course, a bit below average for her age in weight. And she's a bit above average in height. Both have stayed pretty steady on a curve since she was a little baby. She did get one shot--Ouch!--but other than that things went well.

Sarah is still behind in some areas, like self-feeding and drinking (utensils and straw and regular glass), but these have seen improvement recently. And we feel her selective eating will gradually pan out as she matures. Right now, food is pretty much limited still to milk, bread, cheese, crackers, noodles, and the occasional dose of juice, a banana, corn, or broccoli. We supplement, as we've done for awhile now, with vitamins and PediaSure in her milk (and continue offering her what we eat at every meal). If she were more lethargic, we'd be more concerned, but Sarah is happy and healthy and full of energy most days. Plus, she's gained weight since the last doctor visit and shows nothing wrong with her ability to concentrate or perform mental tasks (except for those which are novel and require multiple senses, taking longer for her to process).

Since she's three now, we plan on getting Sarah some more peer interaction through, possibly, Mother's Day Out and a dance or sports class. This will surely help her in areas of social maturity, as well as seeing other kids model physical behavior that she has yet to master. She does not yet walk down stairs on her own nor feel comfortable going down most slides or climbing on and off those springy animal rides on the playground. The "big girl" swing is no problem now, though!

That's about it. I hope you enjoyed Sarah's progress report!
